Ready to Help? City of Half Moon Bay is Seeking Vacant Housing Units for Families Displaced by Mass Shooting; County has Allocated $750K to Help with Funding

March 16, 2023 by Michelle Leave a Comment

PRESS RELEASE. From the City of Half Moon Bay on March 7th, 2023.

Ready to Help? City of Half Moon Bay is Seeking Vacant Housing Units for Families Displaced by Mass Shooting; County has Allocated $750K to Help with Funding.

The City of Half Moon Bay remains committed to supporting the victims and displaced households from the mass shooting that occurred on January 23, 2023.

As a result of the living conditions that existed at the scene of these incidents, households could not return and needed alternative housing solutions. City staff have been working directly with the families and individuals as well as partnering with various organizations on the Coastside and beyond to provide essential services and identifying housing options for the short-term and long-term needs of these displaced households.

Thanks to a partnership with AirBnb.org, the displaced families were able to move out of hotel rooms into local short-term rentals for up to 30 days, but most of these stays are set to expire the first week of March.

We deeply need the help of our Coastside community to identify vacant housing opportunities that may be available in the near term for our displaced families.

The County of San Mateo recently allocated $750,000 to help cover the rental housing costs (expected to cover at least one year of market-rate rent for all involved households), and City staff are actively working with the County and their partners to create a program that will benefit and protect the displaced households.

Partnership opportunities are welcomed if community members with vacant units are interested in opening their homes and/or rental property

If you or someone you know has a vacant property (furnished or unfurnished), please reach out to Julissa Acosta at jacosta@hmcity.com or (650) 750-2010 to get on the interest list to learn more about the housing program.

There is zero commitment associated with adding yourself to the interest list, and we greatly appreciate anyone willing to work with us as we continue to heal and support our Coastside community. City staff are also identifying additional housing opportunities that will assist farmworker and service industry workers throughout the Coastside.

For more information about being a Community Landlord check out this flyer from Abode.
