Friends of the HMB Library Host MUSIC OF BRASIL with Flutist Dominique Gagné and 7-String Guitarist Cesar Garabini

September 11th, 2022 @ 2:00pm - 4:00pm

Sunday, September 11, there will be a free concert open to the public at the Half Moon Bay Library, sponsored by Friends of the Half Moon Bay Library. The mission of Friends of the Library is to support library programming, including literacy, outreach, and cultural events.

As part of this mission, the Friends will be hosting a musical duo from New York, playing music from Brazil, flutist Dominique Gagné and 7-string guitarist Cesar Garabini.  They will take the audience on an exploration of the world of Brasilian music, through a joyous and exuberant expression of Samba, Choro, Bossa Nova, Forró and Brasilian jazz, showcasing their virtuosity, while making the music inviting, accessible, and danceable.  This is a great opportunity to learn about the diverse musical genres from across Brasil.

This concert is free and open to the public, sponsored by the Friends of the Half Moon Bay Library, in the Community Room of the Library at 620 Correas St., in downtown Half Moon Bay.  Masks are recommended.  Sliding glass doors to the courtyard will be open, providing ample fresh air circulation. The event will be from 2 pm to 4 pm.

Friends Treasurer Dave Schorr says this may be the first of a series of musical events free and open to the public, combining music with an educational component of the cultural aspects of the shows, and explanation of the musical techniques and conventions.

Originally from Minas Gerais, Brazil, Cesar Garabini is in demand internationally as a virtuoso 7-string guitarist. Cesar is equally at home with Samba, Choro, Bossa Nova, Jazz and Portuguese Fado.  He has performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Jazz Standard, Birdland, Columbia University, and the Herbst Theater.  .  He has shared the stage with many established artists, and has been featured on NPR, NBC and Global TV in Brazil.

Dominique Gagné is a Brooklyn-based flutist, pianist, composer and educator whose greatest joy is being able to live in New York and perform music from all over the world. Some of Dominique’s collaborations include the all-female salsa band Lulada Club, Santi Debriano’s Arkestra Bembe-Ashanti, Misha Piatigorsky’s Daddy Rabbit, the Memo Acevedo Big Band and Rio-based Casuarina. Dominique is a teaching artist for the the 92nd Street Y in New York, and teaches privately, and in underserved NYC-based public schools. She has performed at Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, the Iridium, Zinc Bar, SOB’s, and Terraza 7. She has appeared with Arturo O’Farrill, Hermeto Pascoal, Hubert Laws, Rachel Therrien, Mark Levine, Anat Cohen and Jovino Santos-Neto.
