City of Half Moon Bay is Seeking Vacant Housing Units for Families Displaced by Mass Shooting

February 23, 2023 by Michelle 1 Comment

PRESS RELEASE. From the City of Half Moon Bay on February 23rd, 2023.

The City of Half Moon Bay remains committed to supporting the victims and displaced farmworker households from the mass shooting that occurred on January 23, 2023.

Due to the living conditions on these farms, families and individuals cannot return to living on the farms at this time, resulting in a need for alternative housing. City staff have been working directly with the families and individuals, as well as partnering with various organizations on the Coastside and beyond, to provide essential services and identify housing for the short- and long-term needs of these farmworkers and families.

Thanks to a partnership with AirBnb.org, the displaced families were able to move out of hotel rooms into local short-term rentals for up to 30 days, but most of these stays are set to expire the first week of March.

How many rooms might there be in these single family homes for the displaced farmworkers?

The City has been seeking rental housing for everyone, and because time is of the essence, we need the help of our Coastside community to identify vacant homes and apartments that may be available in the near term for our displaced families.

The County of San Mateo recently allocated $750,000 to help cover the cost of at least one year of rent for all involved households. City staff are actively working with the County and their partners to create a program for lease management and social services that will benefit and protect the displaced households, while also providing security to willing landlords. Partnership opportunities are welcomed if community members with vacant units are interested in opening their homes and/or rental properties for this worthy cause.

If you or someone you know has a vacant property (furnished or unfurnished), please reach out to Julissa Acosta (City of Half Moon Bay Management Analyst) at jacosta@hmcity.com or (650) 750-2010 to be included on our interest list to learn more about this housing program.

There is zero commitment associated with adding yourself to the interest list, and we greatly appreciate anyone willing to work with us as we continue to heal and support our Coastside community. City staff are also identifying additional housing opportunities that will assist farmworker and service industry workers throughout the Coastside.

The effort should be to get these people living back on the farms where they work in decent living conditions instead of this unsustainable, urban-mindset, social engineering stuff. I was surprised to see the uninformed, knee-jerk reaction against shipping containers. Anyone familiar with the tiny home movement knows individual shipping containers can be modified into very respectable, living spaces, especially for individuals. And shipping containers are being joined to one another to create larger homes. Of course, modified containers are only one possibility for on-site farm housing.
