City of Half Moon Bay Emergency Preparedness ~ Take Steps Now to be Ready for Earthquake, Fire, Flood

November 17, 2022 by Michelle Leave a Comment

NEWSLETTER/VIDEO. From the City of Half Moon Bay eNews, November 10th, 2022 and the City Council meeting on Tuesday, November 15th, 2002 at 7:00pm by Zoom.

HMB Mayor, Debbie Ruddock, introduces the agenda item and Interim Public Works Director, Maz Bozorginia presents.

No one likes to think about disasters or emergencies that may affect our families and homes. But it’s important for everyone to periodically assess their preparedness so that everyone has the tools and information to endure and recover. Preparation at the individual and household levels will help our community as a whole to get through a disaster and come out of it stronger and more resilient.

Now is a good time to take stock of your preparedness for earthquake, fire/wildfire, human-caused disasters, and power outages. And even though we’re in the midst of a record-breaking drought, climate change can bring dramatic variations in weather, and severe flooding remains a real possibility as we enter fall and winter.

Visit our website and ready.gov for easy steps, detailed information, and other links to help you prepare for specific types of emergencies. In the meantime, here are some basics:

  • Register for SMC Alert to receive emergency alerts
  • Prepare emergency supplies to last 72 hours, including non-perishable food, water, batteries, flashlights, a manual can opener, and a battery-operated radio
  • Create an emergency evacuation plan for your family
  • To prevent them from falling during an earthquake, secure heavy items like bookcases, refrigerators, water heaters, televisions and objects that hang on walls
  • If your area is prone to flooding and heavy rain is predicted, fill up sand bags at the City fill in station and use them to protect your property. Bags and sand for you to fill is at the Historic Train Depot below Johnston House 110 Higgins Canyon Road
  • During heavy rain, prevent backups and localized flooding in your neighborhood by helping to keep storm drains in your neighborhood clear. Call Half Moon Bay Public Works Maintenance at 650.726.7177 if you see significant blockages and water backups (after 5pm, call the Sheriff’s dispatch at 650.726.8286)

If your area is prone to flooding and heavy rain is predicted, fill up sand bags at the City fill in station and use them to protect your property. Bags and sand for you to fill is at the Historic Train Depot below Johnston House 110 Higgins Canyon Road
