Local Whale Sightings

July 7, 2016 by suzanne lamar

Numerous whale sightings were reported in Pacifica and along the San Mateo County Coast last week.  Whales are often camera shy. Luckily our friend Rob Cala managed to get some exceptional photos and shared them with us.

We love our amazing local contributors.  Visit Rob Cala’s website for more incredible local photography.

How Do You Spot Whales?

Whales move faster than you might expect for such a large animal. Their whales spouts and breaches can happen quickly.  How do you make sure you are looking the right direction at the right moment?

Bird are great whale watchers. As whales surface, they bring fish to the ocean surface. Birds hang out overhead hoping for an easy meal.  If you see a group of birds over the ocean, watch that spot.  If you are lucky, you will son see a whale spout and/or breach in the same area.  Watch the video below to see whales feeding off Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica.
