SURVEY for Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) on the Coastside

August 16, 2018 by Michelle

Survey. Have you thought about what kind of disasters might happen and what you will do when one does…today…tomorrow…next week?
If you live on the California coast between Devil’s Slide Tunnel and Tunitas Creek Road, you’re on the right site for information.
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. This training will help you care for your family, your neighbors and your community in the case of an emergency.

Whether you’re already a CERT or want to become one,

please fill out this short survey to let us know you’re interested.

Here are some dates to note:

Saturday September 1st and Saturday October 6th

(Same class, choose one date, times to be announced): A CERT introductory class that covers only the first module of CERT training (the full CERT training is 24 hours) plus an overview of how to use FRS radios (aka walkie-talkies) in an emergency. Held at the HMB Firehouse. Dates for the rest of the CERT training (7 other modules) will be announced at the class.

October 27th: Coastside Disaster Exercise: 7.3 – The Coast is Flat.

7.3 Earthquake. EOC (emergency operations center) is down, no fiber (no cell, no landlines, no internet). Using FRS and HAM radios, we will work to find the communication holes in a mass casualty emergency on the Coastside. More information in upcoming weeks.

To participate in either of these events, contact CERTBranch1and2@gmail.com.

Get an FRS Radio

To help with communication during an emergency, we are standardizing the use of FRS radios (aka walkie-talkies) for all CERT members. We recommend you purchase the Midland GTX1000 package that includes two radios, chargers and headsets, etc. The Amazon price is $65 (for two) but you can also find them at Costco or Walmart.

Here is the CERT Basic Training Participant Manual from FEMA.
Thank you for your interest.
Jim Williams
CERT Coordinator for Branches 1 and 2

CEAP

Charise McHugh of the Half Moon bay Chamber of Commerce has worked for several years to organize businesses on the coastside in an emergency via the Coastside Emergency Action Plan). If you are a business and have not already participated, please contact the Chamber. In an emergency we need to know where our resources are and how to deploy materiel, and how to get refunded by FEMA.

SMC Alert

It is a free alert system that will come to your cell phone, your tablet or computer, or all three. There is no charge, although your carrier may charge for texts. This is the best way to stay on top of traffic accidents.

mrcMRC – Medical Reserve Corps

Doctors and nurses work together to become the backbone of an emergency medical situation. Coastside Emergency Experts will tell you that the Coastside will be on its own in a major earthquake disaster for 5-7 days. And we no longer have a Medical Reserve Corps on the Coastside! Contact mdragony@coastsidebuzz.com if you are interested in creating a new chapter.
