Goals

● Engage with Tribes and Native communities, stakeholders, and the broader ocean community who are interested in learning about and becoming involved in the California Halibut fishery management process;

● Facilitate understanding by participants of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (CDFW) current focus on gathering information and assessing the California Halibut resource as part of the 2018 Marine Life Management Act (MLMA) Master Plan for Fisheries implementation;

● Share information about the scope and findings of the California Halibut stock assessment conducted by CDFW and the scientific and technical peer review led by the California Ocean Science Trust (OST);

● Provide an update on next steps to design a science-based, stakeholder-involved management process for the California Halibut fishery that reflects the diversity of knowledge and priorities of the ocean community; and

● Facilitate a Q&A with participants to learn of additional insights and perspectives, and address priority questions and concerns.

Welcome and Context 10:00am – 10:20am

Welcome participants and review webinar goals to create a shared understanding of anticipated outcomes. Introduce participants to the fisheries management framework (2018 Master Plan) guiding CDFW’s research to better understand and responsibly manage the California Halibut resource.

Overview of the 2020 Stock Assessment & Peer Review 10:20am – 11:20am

Present the data collection, data analysis, and stock assessment models used to evaluate the status of the California Halibut resource across the state. Share key findings of the stock assessment, including potential implications for fisheries management. Provide an overview of the peer review process and share high-level findings from the scientific and technical peer review panel that evaluated the stock assessment. Discuss the evolution of the stock assessment based on the peer review panel recommendations.

Building a Roadmap for California Halibut Fishery Management 11:20am – 11:50am

Build a bridge to understanding key aspects of the fisheries management process, including completed and ongoing CDFW efforts to collect data and information. Share CDFW’s vision for working with the community to develop a roadmap for gathering information and assessing the management needs of the California Halibut fishery.

The California Ocean Science Trust received funding from the Resources Legacy Fund to coordinate the scientific peer review of the 2020 California halibut stock assessment and convene a community webinar to share the results of the stock assessment and peer review process.
