Los Hermanos/The Brothers, screening Tuesday, December 28 at 4:00 p.m. $20
An Oscar caliber and contender, family-friendly documentary that illustrates through Cuban-born, virtuoso violinist and pianist brothers, how culture can succeed even when politics fail. In this gorgeous film featuring an electrifying musical score composed by Cuban Aldo López-Gavilán, the brothers are reunited through the lens of music, family and dreams.
Live music preceding screening in lobby plus directors Marcia Jarmel and Ken Schneider to join us for a Q & A following.
About this film: Virtuoso Cuban-born brothers— Ilmar the violinist, and Aldo the pianist— live on opposite sides of a geopolitical chasm a half century wide. Linked by music and dreams, their unfolding story offers a nuanced, often startling view of nations long estranged.
FESTIVAL FILM – Documentary – 1 hr 24 mins
The Comedy Club screening Tuesday, November 28, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. $20
The story of how the legendary, San Francisco Cobb’s Comedy Club has served as an independent breeding ground for comedians like Robin Williams, Dana Carvey, Bob Saget, Ellen DeGeneres, Jim Carrey and Bill Maher. A roller coaster ride of overcoming major obstacles did not prevent Cobb’s from reopening even after a fire, and it has remained open in various locations in San Francisco since 1982.
Special guests offer an opportunity for a fun and hilarious Q&A following the film.
FESTIVAL FILM – Documentary – 1 hr 30 min
Life on Wheels (Transportation For a New Urban Century), screening Wednesday, December 29 at 4:00 p.m. $20
A documentary that makes clear we must meet the transportation challenges we face today, or we may face a world in which our environment may be past the point of no return. This film offers an insightful, intelligent approach for how we get from here to there.
A director’s Q&A with David and HiJin Hodge follows the screening.
FESTIVAL FILM: DAY 2 – Documentary – 54 min
Knocking Down the Fences, a short film screening Wednesday, December 29 at 7:00 p.m. preceding Girls Can’t Surf. Free with Girls Can’t Surf.
SOFTBALL PLAYERS will love this short documentary about AJ Andrews, a relatively unknown (and under-paid) superstar pro softball player despite being one of the best pro softball players in the world. Viewers will undoubtedly be cheering for Andrews as she continues her fight for justice and against gender discrimination in the world of professional softball.
Director Meg Shutzer will join others for Q & A following Girls Can’t Surf.
FESTIVAL SHORT FILM – DAY 2 – Documentary – 12 min
Girls Can’t Surf, immediately screening after Knocking Down the Fences at around 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29, 2021. $20
Finally, we get to show this documentary that tells the story of the trail-blazing mavericks and awe-inspiring female surfers that overcame a wave of chauvinistic attitudes to make it possible for females to really compete in professional surfing and finally earn the respect they deserve. Much like the daredevils that attempt Mavericks, it is only fitting that this world-famous surf spot is just minutes away from the Festival’s venue. We will be joined by Ashley Gray of Surfrider Foundation, Half Moon Bay High School Alumni/Graduate Student of Scripps Institute of Oceanography and lifelong surfer, Kaira Wallace, Director of Knocking Down the Fences, Meg Shutzer and Founder of Mavericks Ventures, Elizabeth Cosswell. Sponsored in part by Surfrider Foundation San Mateo County Chapter.
FESTIVAL FILM DAY 2 – 1 hr 48 min
Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It, screening Thursday, December 30 at 6:30 p.m., is the Festival’s closing night film. $65
It is the celebratory, highly entertaining documentary, and trailblazing icon, Moreno, represents the epitome of triumphing over adversity. Appearing in the original and now remake of West Side Story that premiers this week, Moreno has overcome racial and gender stereotyping and discrimination with both humor and grace. Her story is also the story of all women who feel alone as they struggle to assert themselves under challenging (at best) situations.
This film will be followed by a reception catered by local Event Savvy and tastings by Half Moon Bay Distillery to close out the three day festival.
FESTIVAL FILM: CLOSING NIGHT – Documentary – 1 hr 30 min
