Peninsula Resilience Planning (PREP) Community Workshops

San Mateo County, and seven municipalities are working collaboratively on this project.

San Mateo County, Atherton, Belmont, Brisbane, Burlingame, East Palo Alto, Half Moon Bay, Pacifica, and San Bruno are working collaboratively on the Peninsula Resilience Planning (PREP) project.

PREP is a project to study how natural hazards and climate change will harm our communities, and to plan for a safer and more resilient future. Join us for a community workshop to learn about the PREP project and share your thoughts and experiences with flooding, wildfire, earthquakes, landslides, extreme heat, and other severe weather or natural hazards.

This event will include a presentation by the project team, interactive polling, Q&A, and small group discussions where community members are encouraged to share feedback.

San Mateo County, and seven municipalities are working collaboratively on this project. This project will plan for the harm posed by climate change and natural hazards for each participating jurisdiction, including updating the safety elements for many communities. A safety element is a required section of the general plan that identifies potential natural and human-caused hazards that could affect residents, businesses, and services in the community.

The purpose of the Safety Element is to establish a framework that anticipates these hazards and prepares the community to minimize the risks of these hazards.

What is a Safety Element and why is it important?

A Safety Element identifies the hazards of concern in a community. Goals are a desired outcome. Policies and actions are steps that the community will take, either on their own or in partnership with other public agencies or community partners, to work toward and achieve their goals.

Hazards included in a Safety Element can include wildfire, flooding, earthquakes, landslides, extreme weather, sea level rise, pests and diseases, human health hazards, hazardous materials, and others. State law directs the inclusion of certain hazards, topics, and components as shown in the Safety Element Update Per State Law figure.

Workshop Objective

The purpose of the community workshops will be to opportunities for the public to provide input and engage with the Safety Element process. It will focus on discussing hazards of concern, experiences with hazards, and identifying vulnerable populations and assets to the community.

The goal of the workshop series is to receive input on how community members have prepared for, responded to, and recovered from past climate hazard events.

Following a presentation of the project and preliminary results of the vulnerability assessment there will be small group discussions to understand the lived experiences of community members in relation to climate change-related hazards. The goal for community member participants is to gain a better understanding of safety elements, what they accomplish, and why the participating jurisdictions are preparing them.

Interpretation

All community workshops will be facilitated in English. Simultaneous interpretation from English to Spanish or other languages will be provided on a time-and-materials basis upon request.  All presentation materials will be available in English and Spanish.
