ABOUT:

For 56 years, every Labor Day weekend, a magical event has occurred in the redwood forest above Woodside. This year, planning for the Kings Mountain Art Fair has evolved and adapted to meet the challenges of the current times. The Fair will be going virtual in order to raise money for our Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Brigade and local Kings Mountain Elementary School and to support our independent artists who are struggling in this difficult time. Visitors can attend the Fair from their homes anywhere in the world. The Kings Mountain Virtual Art Fair has the ability to bring art patrons and creators together safely while staying physically apart. Visitors will be able to chat live with the artists via the virtual art fair platform and link to artists’ websites to buy extraordinary original art. Rain or shine or coronavirus, the Fair goes on.

“The Kings Mountain community looks forward to the Art Fair every year. Although we are not able to host the fair on the mountain this year, we are thrilled to put on a virtual fair to support the artists, Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Brigade and Kings Mountain Elementary School. It is our 57th year holding a fair, but we are always growing and changing,” says Executive Director, Bev Abbott.

The Fair is 100% run by volunteers. Residents started the Art Fair in 1963 as a fundraiser to help create a volunteer fire brigade after a house fire in the remote Kings Mountain community. The first fair, held in a red barn, featured mostly local artists and raised $50. That same resiliency persists, as the community responds to the pandemic by launching this new kind of art fair.

Held every year since 1963, Kings Mountain Art Fair has grown into a juried show with many artists. It has a reputation among artists and fairgoers alike as one of the best art shows on the West Coast, offering fine art that is original and created by independent artists.

Proceeds from the Art Fair go directly back to the community, supporting the all-volunteer Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, which responded to 336 emergencies in 2019. As the KMFD is an all-risk fire department, the volunteers are trained for the same emergency services as provided by paid fire departments in the county. Some of these services include structure fires, wildland fires, vehicle fires, rope rescues, and hazardous materials spills. Proceeds also support the Kings Mountain Elementary School, a 3-room school for grades K-5 with approximately 60 children.
