“It has been 10 weeks since the complete closure of Highway 84 near the town of Woodside. We need better communication from Caltrans as to the status of repairs. I urge them to provide an estimated date on reopening—either temporary or permanent.  While I understand the complexity of repairing this 250-foot landslide, this prolonged closure severely affects the residents, businesses and public safety responders. My office will continue to work with the Town of Woodside and Caltrans to ensure a safe and expedient repair to Highway 84” said State Senator Josh Becker.

“The prolonged closure of Highway 84 is more than just an inconvenience for the community—it is a safety hazard for my constituents,” said Assemblymember Marc Berman. “Residents are rightfully frustrated, especially with the lack of communication from Caltrans. This meeting is an opportunity to strengthen community engagement and impress upon Caltrans the urgency of the situation as they work on a plan for the highly complex repairs to the road.”

“Highway 84 is a critical artery for San Mateo County residents”, said San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller. “The negative impacts of this closure on our seniors, those with functional and access needs, commuters, and local businesses are significant and urgent. We appreciate Caltrans’ attention to this roadway and we continue to strongly press for them to expedite and prioritize its repair.”

“Highway 84 is one of the primary east-west routes connecting the coastal communities of San Mateo County to the bay region. Woodside estimates that the Average Daily Traffic Count is in excess of 7,000 trips per day comprised of commutes to employment and schools, healthcare, and vital services. The State Highway also serves as a principal evacuation route for natural disasters including earthquakes and fires. The importance of a fully-functioning Highway 84 cannot be underestimated,” said Woodside Mayor Chris Shaw.

Full Closure of State Route 84 at Portola Road, Due to Landslide

From Caltrans webpage.

SAN MATEO COUNTY- State Route 84 at Portola Road near the town of Woodside is closed due to a landslide related to recent weather events beginning in early March. The 250-foot-wide slide has impacted the roadway and is not safe for motorists to travel at this time. The slide area is still considered active. Caltrans continues to monitor and assess the conditions. There is no estimated timeline for repairs as the location continues to be impacted by weather events. As the saturation levels decrease and the stability improves, crews can safety implement repairs.

The public is advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

Caltrans would like to thank the public for their continued patience and support as we work to repair the roadway.
