County of San Mateo Office of Sustainability Hosts Composting Workshop at Senior Coastsiders Brand New Community Garden

Have you noticed the work taking place off the dining room on the south end of the building?
We are excited to be installing a community garden for use by our participants and other neighbors!
Through a grant provided by the County of San Mateo Office of Sustainability (OOS), we will soon have raised (ADA accessible) planter beds, fruit trees and edible shrubs, and an area for compost.
And to get us started, staff from the OOS will be on site on Saturday, May 20 from 12:30-2:30 for a composting workshop!
Come learn how easy and fun it is to recycle your fruit and vegetable scraps, leaves, and plant cuttings into compost in this free workshop!
Workshop will teach composting options suitable for those with or without a backyard.
Apartment dwellers welcome! Compost provides valuable nutrients for your garden soil, helps retain moisture, which saves water, prevents erosion, loosens clay and compacted soils for better drainage, and suppresses weeds.
It is rewarding to know you are turning what some consider waste into precious organic material for your garden. Saturday, May 20, 12:30-2:30PM – south patio.
