Mystical and comforting, the art of Ken Paul Lozado includes drawings of historic buildings, original art prints and his signature wood sculptures that he worked on in a field by the side of Main Street, literally a local artist.

“He was a unique, irreplaceable thread in the fabric of the coastal community,” said Clay Lambert, editor of the Half Moon Bay Review.

The Coastal Arts League will be offering a retrospective exhibition of his work at the
Coastal Arts League Gallery – 300 Main Street, Half Moon Bay – from January 12-29,
2003. Exhibit hours are 11-4 Thursday through Monday. With a Gala Reception
Saturday January 14 th at Noon.

Lozado died in June 2021 at the age of 89. His life was filled with both tragedy and hope. Born in San Francisco in 1932 to a Chinese mother and a Filipino father, he spentvhis early years in an orphanage after his father died and joined the Navy at the age of 18. Afterward, he made a living teaching and selling art.

He was a fixture in Half Moon Bay, creating his alluring wood sculptures from recycled material as well as leading drumming circles and performing at Cameron’s pub. In October 2022 the City accepted two of his sculptures to be on display in the Half Moon Bay Library garden.

A Book

Peaceful Warrior: The Life of Ken Paul Lozada
by Joanne Ehrich

Of those people who were once drawn to Ken Paul Lozada’s sculpture garden in Half Moon Bay, California, vying to get a closer look at pieces of wood to which he has given a new life with shiny, undulating lines, cavernous abysses, and chiseled squares, many found their initial interest giving way to a sense of wanting to know more about this man who seems to be able to intuit things only known to them.

A near-death experience after a car accident left Ken, who spent many years in an orphanage, with a new understanding about the gift of life which he has since sought to share with others. He has surrendered to complete honesty and openness, while becoming a conveyor of truth, who transforms chaos into harmony. His gravity-defying fragments of wood become symbols of restoration as these once-majestic trees that have been discarded get a new lease on life.
