Brews & Views welcomes Cabrillo Unified School District’s Board President Sophia Layne Superintendent Sean McPhetridge, and Brookwood Advisors Allan Katz and Chris White for a discussion about CUSD’s mission, vision, and strategies, including a preview of Cabrillo Unified School District’s current design of 60 rental townhomes and apartments for faculty and staff in Half Moon Bay.
Alan Katz and Chris White of Brookwood Advisors have extensive experience working with California school districts and other institutions to develop their surplus and underutilized properties into workforce housing and other beneficial uses, including the recently completed 122-unit 705 Serramonte Blvd project in Daly City for faculty and staff of the Jefferson Union High School District.
Dr. Sean McPhetridge, Superintendent Cabrillo Unified School District
Dr. Sean McPhetridge was hired to serve as Superintendent of Cabrillo Unified School District in 2019 after serving for five years in the same role in Alameda Unified School District. In 2022, the CUSD Governing Board renewed his contract for another four years. Dr. McPhetridge earned a doctorate in education from Harvard University, an administrative credential from California State University at Sacramento, a master’s degree from Claremont Graduate University, and a bachelor’s degree from University of California at Los Angeles. Proficient in Spanish, Dr. McPhetridge has worked for thirty years in various educational roles and settings.
Sophia Layne, Board President Cabrillo Unified School District
Sophia Layne is in her second term as a member of the CUSD Governing Board. She also actively advocates for public education as Vice President of the San Mateo County School Board Association and a Delegate and Legislative Committee Member of the California School Board Association. She spent 16 years in various leadership roles at Genentech and other biotech and consulting firms in the Bay Area after earning her Masters’ degree at NYU and Bachelors’ at Rutgers University.
Lenny Mendonca
Moderator, Co-founder of the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, Former Chief Economic and Business Advisor to Governor Gavin Newsom of California. He is a Senior Partner Emeritus of McKinsey & Company and a Lecturer on Inequality at the Stanford Business School.
The Cabrillo Unified School District School Governing Board is comprised of five school board members who are elected by the local community. The role of the school board is to provide leadership and oversight of the district. The Board ensures that the district is responsive to the values, beliefs, and priorities of the community.
The term of office for school board members elected in regular elections is four years, beginning on the second Friday in December after their election. The board meets at least once a month at the District Office, 498 Kelly Avenue, Half Moon Bay. Meetings are open to the public and are usually held on Thursday nights at 6 pm. A portion of the board meeting consists of a “closed” session for the purpose of discussing confidential matters, such as personnel or student issues.
