California State Park Restoration Champions

Upcoming HMB State Beach Restoration Events….Many ways to volunteer, Many ways to have fun and learn more about nature. For all ages.

The Coastal Butterfly was buzzing along the Coastal Trail on Saturday, January 20th, 2018. She came upon more than 50 people pulling invasive plants and plants natives. Connie Taniguchi hailed her as she was pedaling by. The CB stopped to get some 411 on the happenings.

“Park Champions holds HMB State Beach events on the 3rd Saturday morning each month.  We focus on habitat restoration – planting natives in the winter, and removing invasive plants during the rest of the year.  A free day use parking pass is given to volunteers, good for parking at all San Mateo Coastside State Parks. Tools, training, and gloves are also provided during the event.  Registration is at calparks.org/volunteer.

On Saturday, we had our highest attended event ever at HMB State Beach – 55 volunteers!  We planted 500 natives at Dunes, all grown at a volunteer-run nursery located at Francis beach.  We’ve planted over 8400 natives at Francis, Dunes and Venice beach locations over the past 4 years and cleared acres of invasive weeds.  Our long term goal is to return a mostly native ecosystem to HMB State Beach!
We’d love to get more local volunteers from the San Mateo coastside communities!
Thanks so much for sending the word out via CoastsideBuzz about our ongoing habitat restoration efforts.”
