Overgrown Vegetation has Met its Match – the Goats are in Town!

July 31, 2019 by Michelle

ARTICLE. Have you noticed herds of goats around the City and thought to yourself, what is goat(ing) on? As part of the City’s efforts to control overgrown and potentially fire-hazardous vegetation in an environmentally friendly way, a herd of goats has been “hired” to graze their way through some grass. Mitigating fire hazards and increasing pest control is particularly important this time of year, and the goats are a low-cost, minimally invasive way to deal with the vegetation.

While the goat herder is responsible for setting up the paddock, City staff has provided detailed maps to the herders clearly outlining sensitive areas that they are to stay away from. Also, biologists have been on-site numerous times to help the goat herders identify the spots they are to avoid.

The goats arrived last week and have been grazing the area south of Grandview Boulevard and east of Highway 1 since Wednesday. They are working their way south towards Terrace Avenue and should be finished in that area in the next 10 days. After that, they will move across Highway 1 to work on the area by the Sewer Authority Mid-Coastside (SAM) Plant. Completion of the entire project should occur by mid-August.

The City feels that this method of controlling vegetation is the most environmentally friendly approach. By using goats, we are not using any powered equipment such as mowers or trimmers which both burn fossil fuels and can disturb the habitat underneath the vegetation.
