MWSD General Manager, in the Wake Harald’s Death, Wonders Why Hwy 1 is 55mph through the towns of Moss Beach and Montara?

October 20, 2022 by Michelle 1 Comment

VIDEO. From the Montara Water and Sanitary District (MWSD) Director’s meeting on Thursday, October 6th, 2022 at 7:30pm by Zoom.

General Manager, Clemens Heldmaier, lost his friend and fellow German, Harald Herrmann, and nearly lost 3 members of the MWSD crew, who were saved by a tree.

He asks the board of Directors that MWSD take a larger role in Hwy 1 Safety to keep his staff and citizens safe, in honor of Harald. He wonders why Hwy 1 is 55mph with all the intersections and driveways. In Germany, the speed is 55km (35mph) in urban areas to protect bikes and pedestrians.

I’ve requested that the headline and article be rewritten to be more accurate, as the it seemed to conclusively determine speed was an issue in the fatal accident, when it’s apparently more likely that the driver lost control of his car due to other factors.

Here’s how the HMB Review followed-up. https://www.hmbreview.com/news/da-truck-driver-distracted/article_e53f0f06-49b0-11ed-b0dc-9f013579b25d.html

Clemens Heldmaier mentioned 50mph, not 55mph as the headline lists. And the speed limit is 45 mph and 50 mph in Moss Beach and Montara, not 55 mph as by HMB Airport.

And Moss Beach is not an urban area by any stretch of the imagination.

It’s disappointing how many inflammatory things were included in the posting — are you trying to emulate FauxNews? — and in the MWSD discussion. One fatality is one too many, but excessive speed was not the cause of the accident. To prevent ones like the one that just occurred, work on finding ways to combat distracted driving.
