“MightyFly?

What: Big honkin’ autonomous drones.

Why we like it: Drones are cool. Drone delivery is super cool. Big honkin’ drones that can fly more than 300 miles and carry payloads in excess of 50 pounds at a fraction of the cost of helicopters are extra cool.

These drones feature automated cargo loading and unloading, and requiring no launch or recovery infrastructure and the founding team comes from the $1.2 billion drone unicorn, Zipline. Metal.”

Such a beautiful vision it is, a world where blue herons and pelicans and starlings are replaced in our skies by 150-mph, 500-lb-carrying, mechanical delivery missiles. Not only will it be good for our souls, but it will solve the real killer problem that vexes the world in the 21st century: faster delivery of consumer goods, er oh yeah, critical lifesaving medicines, materials, and resources (probably delivered free of charge too). The question humans should ask themselves every day, especially the MIT/CalTech/Stanford/Harvard types that love to push, push, push: It is not whether it can be done, but whether it should be done. There is no doubt this can be done; and there is no doubt in my mind it should not be done. Yesterday Radio Shack toy drones; today 150-mph, 500-lb-carrying, mechanical delivery missiles; tomorrow flying cars. The flying objects will get bigger, faster, heavier, more. Once done, things like this cannot be undone. Enjoy your open skies now.
