UNDERGROUND ZERO is a collaborative film project comprised of a collection of short films by a variety of experimental and documentary filmmakers in response to the events of September 11, 2001.
One week after 9/11, San Francisco-based filmmakers Jay Rosenblatt and Caveh Zahedi asked 150 independent filmmakers to create a short film or video related to the events.
Zahedi and Rosenblatt write, “The idea for the film was to counter the mainstream media’s narrow representation of events as well as to give voice to the diversity of responses within the independent film community. It also occurred to us that a collective response would be both more powerful and effective than isolated individual responses.”
Eleven of the resulting works are included in UNDERGROUND ZERO, a feature-length video that studies the significance of September 11th through a variety of creative, personal and cultural perspectives.
In addition to receiving rave critical notices, UNDERGROUND ZERO was named one of the Top Ten films of the year by the San Francisco Chronicle and the Independent Weekly.
Jay Rosenblatt and Caveh Zahedi have each been making films for over 25 years. Friends and frequent creative collaborators, they are both Guggenheim Fellowship recipients whose films have screened on television and at festivals throughout the world. The additional filmmakers included in UNDERGROUND ZERO are an accomplished group of media artists, veteran filmmakers and teachers from across the United States.
