RCD Hosts: El Granada Wildfire Resiliency Listening Session: Tues. Jan. 25th at 6pm

January 25th, 2022 @ 6:00pm

Members of the El Granada community are invited to a listening session hosted by the Resource Conservation District to share your insights, information, priorities, and resources related to wildfire resiliency. This is a valuable opportunity to provide input to the Panorama Environmental consultant team for theĀ El Granada Wildfire Resiliency Scoping Project.

TheĀ purposeĀ of theĀ project is toĀ develop a site-specific understanding of wildfire scenarios for El Granada and the surrounding communityĀ and scope a suite of actions that would most effectively reduce those risks.Ā It will:

  • DefineĀ the wildfire risks to El Granada and affected communities, including overview of fire ecology, local fire history, fire environment (fuels characteristics, fuel models, weather, topography)
  • AssessĀ wildfire risks to El Granada and affected communities, including most likely scenarios, ignition probability, fire behavior, potential fire spread, and general identification of values at risk
  • Identify and scopeĀ an array of potential actions that would most effectively reduce those risks and build wildfire resiliency

The consultants are in their information-gathering phase, which includes input from the community. This meeting will focus on listening to the community and will not be a report out about the project.

There are a number of ways to get additional information or updates about the El Granada Wildfire Resiliency Scoping Project, including:

Wildfire in the Midcoast

2018 Sierra Foothills – Wildfire destroys the town of Paradise.

The Sierra Foothills Camp Fire in the summer of 2018 brought a sharp focus on the increasing wildfire hazard in the west, and the 2020 CZU Lightning Fire in southern San Mateo County brought home this awareness of local vulnerability.

  • See 2020 webinar on Fire Danger on the San Mateo County Coastside, with special focus on dense eucalyptus forest in Quarry Park / El Granada.

  • San Mateo County Parks releases the Forest Health & Community Safety Initiative, a five-year plan to mitigate wildfire danger in county parks.

El Granada Fire Resiliency Scoping Project

In 2021 Supervisor Horsley allocated $75,000 funding to RCD to provide a basis for longer term resources needed to address wildfires and establish fire resilient forests and communities (RFP).

RCD has selected a consultant, Panorama Environmental, to begin work in December and submit a final report April 30, 2022. Three RCD-convened meetings are planned between the consultant and the partner representatives from CAL FIRE/ County Fire, San Mateo County, and the Midcoast Community Council:

  • to develop understanding of stakeholder concerns, information, and ideas regarding wildfire, including existing metrics, models, and materials that are specific to El Granada and the surrounding area;

  • to present the draft summary of assessment findings and seek feedback; and

  • to present the draft potential actions and seek feedback.

The final product, including the findings, assessment of risks, and suite of actions, will be presented at a community-focused public meeting convened by the RCD and partners, estimated in May 2022 (timeline).
