Medio Bridge Petition to Support Immediate Repair. Redesign at Another Location = 7 to 10 Years

February 4th, 2021 - February 10th, 2021

Petition deadline is 2/10/2021 at the 7:00pm Midcoast Community Council meeting. The MCC will share their letter, during their meeting, on February 10.

Dear Coastsiders:

If you are a Coastal Trail user, please sign a petition asking the Midcoast Community Council (MCC) to take a strong position in support of the replacing the Coastal Trail bridge over Medio Creek in its current location as soon as possible.
The Coastside Trail bridge over Arroyo de en Medio in Miramar has been closed since July 2020.  The San Mateo County Department of Public Works has completed the planning for a project to replace the bridge by this coming August.  (Project detail can be reviewed at:  https://publicworks.smcgov.org/projects/mirada-road-pedestrian-bridge-replacement)
If this project is not pursued, alternative solutions will take 7 to 10 years to complete.
The MidCoast Community Council is drafting a letter to the County, and also the Coastal Commission, with their recommendations.  The MCC will share their letter during their meeting on February 10.
We need your support now.

Send your signed petition to:  medio.preparedness@gmail.com

Almost 300 users of the Coastal Trail have signed this petition requesting that the MCC support moving forward with the project to replace the Arroyo de en Medio bridge in its current location according to the plans submitted by the San Mateo County Public Works.

These signatures represent an overwhelming sentiment by users of the Coastal Trail to replace the bridge immediately in its current location.

The signature collectors have a few observations from collecting these signatures:

  • Almost everybody feels the bridge should be replaced in its current position.  They do not want to wait 7 to 10 years (the time the County planners said would be required to find alternatives).  For some, their children will be adults by that time.  For others who are elderly, they will not be able to utilize that alternative at all.
  • The current configuration of traveling through the Miramar neighborhood on surface roads is very dangerous.  The roads are congested and the intersections offer many opportunities for pedestrians, bicycle riders and cars to collide.  The only place to avoid this danger is the current path over the creek in its current location.
  • The public holds a high degree of concern over the impact to the environment.  They support longer term planning.  However, the public feels delaying replacement of the bridge, in its current location, while starting a long term planning process, makes little sense. They feel that their access to the beach and the coast is being denied.

The petition indicates that the MCC should be proactively looking for ways to help the County secure the necessary approvals to complete this project , and tell the California Coastal Commission to approve the project.

We need you to express your support for replacing the bridge in its current location by signing this petition!
