Made On The Coast Emerging Artist Program Grant FAQs

 EMERGING ARTISTS APPLICATION

Made on The Coast (MotC) is a juried showcase of local coastside artists at the annual Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival. MotC entries are reviewed and juried by other local artists, who aim to keep the quality and originality of the art high and keep the booth offerings balanced and varied. To further the artistic community of the coast, MotC offers a grant to a local emerging artist to support their continued artistic development and provide a public venue to showcase and sell their work at the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival, Made on the Coast Locals Block.

What is an emerging artist?
For the purposes of this grant, an emerging artist is an artist in any artistic medium who has mastered basic techniques in their art form and who is taking their work in a new direction. An artist is not required to have any particular degree or type of education to qualify as an emerging artist.
The emerging artist is required to be at least 16 years old as of January 1, 2021 and must be local as defined by MotC. Ages 16-18 must have signed parental consent. The artist must reside on the coast with legal address between Montara and Pescadero, and the ocean to Skyline Blvd in San Mateo County at the time of application through to the Art and Pumpkin Festival (October 17, 2021).

What is the Emerging Artists Program?
The MoTC Emerging Artists Program (EAP) provides financial support to developing or established professionals by funding a project pivotal to the advancement of their careers as artists. Pivotal projects may happen at different stages of a career. Therefore, the EAP grants are not restricted to un-established artists. However, MotC does like to promote art that can be enjoyed by the community at large.

Who decides which artists receive awards?
Grant applications and support materials are reviewed by local professional artists in each art form. Their comments are then forwarded to the MotC EAP Committee who reviews applications, recommendations and makes the final award.

What types of projects have been funded?
The EAP Committee is interested in assisting the development of an artist’s career as is appropriate to the particular artist’s needs, so be sure to define clearly the relationship of your project to your career development. Grant awards typically provide funds for the following types of expenses:

  • Promotion/Presentation: the cost of producing a demonstration CD for a composer, a DVD for a choreographer, a portfolio for a graphic artist, editorial assistance for a writer, etc.
  • Travel: to specific workshops, auditions, retreats or seminars; or to do research intrinsic to his/her art form.
  • Services: rental of equipment or facilities for presentation or creation of a new work.
  • Supplies: purchase of supplies, materials or equipment necessary for the completion or production of a new work that the artist considers essential to her/his career.
  • Training: advanced workshops, master classes or coaching that will enhance the artist’s abilities. This program does not support work toward a degree.

What selection criteria will be used?
The criteria are:

  • Overall excellence of the applicant’s artwork and demonstration of exceptional talent.
  • The applicant’s serious professional commitment to their art form.
  • Contribution of the project to the community at large
  • Contribution of the proposed project to the artist’s professional development.
  • Feasibility of the proposed project.
  • Timeline for the proposed project should happen between June 30 and October 18, 2020.
  • The committee reserves the right to select more than one applicant.

Who funds the EAP?
The MotC Emerging Artists Program is funded through Made on the Coast, a subcommittee of the Half Moon Bay Beautification Committee, a 501(c) (3) Non-Profit Public Benefit Corporation with the mission of the beautification of Main Street in the City of Half Moon Bay and civic organizations of the Half Moon Bay community. Funds being awarded in 2021 are derived from Made on the Coast vendor artists’ donations of 10% of their booth profits from the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival each year.

How much money can I expect to be granted?
While no specific minimum has been established, the maximum amount an applicant can request is $1,500. The MotC judges will determine the full amount of each grant depending on requests and reasonable costs associated with the project.

Will I be required to provide a final report of my use of the grant?
Yes, we require both a financial and narrative report. A report form will be sent to those receiving awards.

When will the grant application become available?
The application will open November 21st and will be due by February 28th, 2021.  Please return to this page for application on November 21st, 2020.
