“Electrifying…a moving documentary” – The New York Times

“Expertly crafted and beautifully paced, like a great piece of music.” – Joshua Bell, violinist

“The compelling tale of a family disrupted by geopolitics.” – Peter Keough, Boston Globe

Made by award-winning Bay Area filmmakers, Marcia Jarmel and Ken Schneider, Los Hermanos is an intimate, joyful celebration of family, love, creativity and music, played out against the backdrop of more than half a century of strife amongst the world’s superpowers, the story will make you laugh and cry; the music will make you want to get up and dance.

Ilmar and Aldo López-Gavilán are virtuoso Afro-Cuban musician brothers, born in Havana in the 70s. Tracking their parallel lives, poignant reunion, and momentous first performances together on stages across the U.S., Los Hermanos / The Brothers is a nuanced, intensely moving view of nations long estranged, through the lens of music and family.

Cuban native and Half Moon Bay resident, Maikel Garcia, will delight the audience with live music before the film. A saxophonist and composer noted for his complex and innovative improvisation, Maikel has degrees in both music performance and education from conservatories in Santiago. He grew up in a home alive with bossanova, classical, and Afro-Cuban music. Today, he combines jazz with his Latin roots and funk to create a unique fusion of rhythms.

The filmmakers will be present for a Q&A following the film.

This film is partially sponsored by Beach Break Entertainment and was a 2021 Beach Break Film Festival selection.

“Today it is harder than ever for Cubans and Americans to cross borders. Americans still know little of one of their closest neighbors, seeing Cuba as either island paradise or socialist prison. We rarely hear the perspectives of Cubans themselves. The Cubans we know are deeply proud of their values, their artistic achievements, their way of life. They want change—and self-determination. They have generously shared their stories with us. We are committed to bringing them to you.”

– Marcia and Ken
