75% Think Speed is a Safety Issue ~ Next Steps for Half Moon Bay’s E-bike and Electric Motorized Vehicles Coastal Trail Survey

October 11, 2022 by Michelle 1 Comment

PRESS RELEASE. From the City of Half Moon Bay eNews on October 6th, 2022.

Subscribe to stay up on the latest doings with the City of Half Moon Bay.

Thank you to all of those who participated in the E-Bike and Other Electric Motorized Vehicles Survey. We received a total of 241 responses from those residing in Half Moon Bay and beyond. Your participation in this survey was crucial in helping us identify and understand the usage and purpose of the three trails, the Coastal Trail, Naomi Patridge Trail, and the Eastside Parallel Trail. Many themes presented themselves in the survey including a need for safety improvements.

Additional themes included:

  • About 79% of poll takers utilize any of these trails at least once a week, and a majority of you uses it for recreation purposes.
  • Almost 75% of poll takers feel that speed along the trails represents a safety factor.
  • Over 65% of the poll takers believe that the City should not prohibit any electric motorized vehicles (i.e. e-bikes, electric skateboards, electric monowheels, and electric scooters) on all trails, and should focus more on speed limits and safety improvement operations.

City Staff will be discussing the results and information received at the upcoming Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee Meeting on November 3, 2022, at 6:30 p.m. via Zoon. Please join us and participate in this important conversation. The meeting agenda and information has not yet been posted, but please keep an eye out on our website and social media channels as it gets closer to the meeting date. If you have any further questions, please reach out to Jonathan Woo, Assistant Engineer at jwoo@hmbcity.com.

The speed of the cycler is what needs regulating. Non-electric assist bikes can reach speeds of 30mph or more but have no restrictions on the trail. Cars that can travel 150mph or more are allowed on city streets, regulated by behavior and not capability.
